Across north-west Australia in the early 1900s, Pinctada maxima pearl oysters were hand-collected for their lustrous mother-of-pearl shells.
At its peak, the Broome and Eighty Mile Beach region accounted for more than 75% of the world’s mother-of-pearl production, with over 400 vessels harvesting up to 2,000 tonnes annually.
It was here, in 1935, that 19-year-old Nicholas Paspaley Snr purchased his first pearling lugger, laying the foundations of the Paspaley legacy, passed down through generations.

Paspaley divers hand collect wild Pinctada maxima pearl oysters, certified as a sustainable practice by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), with certificate number MSC-F-30005.
Our pearl beds stretch across the remote Kimberley coastline, reflecting the natural conditions essential for producing the world’s finest mother-of-pearl and pearls.
Operating under strict licensing and quota systems in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, we maintain long‑term stability of wild oyster populations through responsible and respectful stewardship.
